Hotel interiors and exteriors with the Fuji X-T1

Introduction

You can often find me roaming the halls and corridors of hotels, especially early in the morning and late at night. Places that can be so busy during the day, are virtually deserted, and it gives you an opportunity to fully appreciate the architecture and decor.

Using long exposures give your images an eerie and desolate look, and you’ll probably see things mosts guests will never see.

I’m using my Fuji X-T1 here, it’s relatively lightweight and portable, so I can fit it in my hand luggage. fujifilm also have an excellent lens selection available and I find the XF 10-24mm an excellent wide angle zoom for inerior photography.

It’s not the fasterst lens available (f/4), but it renders very sharp corner-to-corner images with lots of punch and the X-TRANS2 sensor has anough dynamic range to play around with highlights and shadows in post processing.

The use of a good tripod is essential in these situations, as I rarely shoot above ISO 200 and have aperture set at f/8 for optimal sharpness. This means longer exposure times, but this is not problematic if you use a tripod. If I don’t have a remote handy, I use the Fuji X-T1’s timer function set to 2 seconds, eliminating any movement when pressing the shutter.
